How to Have the Best Summer Weekend
With the days getting warmer and more things reopening all around NYC, it feels like this summer is set to be a hot one! The city is abuzz with new restaurants, parks, hangouts, and activities, and after so many months spent in lockdown, it can be hard to know where to begin. Getting back into social life can feel both exciting and overwhelming, so this week we’ve compiled some highlights to help get you started. Read ahead for our guide to enjoying a fabulous weekend in our newly reopened city!
Brunch at Smorgasburg
With peak outdoor dining and drinking season returning to NYC, there’s nothing but amazing spots to choose from all over town. If this makes picking a brunch place feel all too taxing, have no fear! One of the city’s best outdoor food markets, Smorgasburg, is returning to several locations this month, and with it comes the chance to sample a bunch of great vendors all at once. Their WTC location is open Fridays from 11am-7pm.
Sail Away at Grand Banks
There are plenty of excellent outdoor and rooftop bar options here in Lower Manhattan, but there’s something particularly summer-y about sipping cocktails on a ship while watching the sun set over the Hudson. Grand Banks, a historic wooden ship docked in nearby Tribeca, serves up super fresh and sustainably harvested oysters, in addition to seasonally-appropriate, nautical themed cocktails--the perfect summertime twist to your typical happy hour spot. Be sure to make reservations ahead of time here.
R&R at Local Spa
With a year plus spent in lockdown, it’s been a minute since most of us have pampered ourselves with some R&R at a local spa. Treat yourself to a little self care now that it feels safe enough to do so! Glosslab in Tribeca is a fab spot for a mani/pedi, and they’ve implemented tons of safety protocols to ensure they’re protecting staff, visitors, and the environment with every service offered.
Perfect Park Day
Nothing says summertime vibes quite like spreading out the picnic blanket and spending a day sprawled out in one of New York’s fantastic city parks. Here in Battery Park City, we’ve got tons of green space to choose from, whether it’s camping out at home on Gateway’s own North Lawn, or venturing out to the lovely nature-filled oasis of the surrounding Battery Park. Bring a picnic lunch along and enjoy a leisurely afternoon watching all the entertainment of city life as it passes by.
Visit The Harry Potter Store
Whether bringing kiddos or just visiting to stay in touch with your own inner child, the newly opened Harry Potter flagship store in the Flatiron district is sure to offer a magical experience for all! From exclusive products to interactive areas, the store has plenty of ways to keep visitors entertained. Engrave your own wand or emboss a journal in the store’s Things That Must Be Named section. Or grab a glass of the series’ signature drink in the store’s exclusive Butterbeer Bar. All visitors will be asked to join a virtual queue upon arriving at the store to maintain safe capacity limits.
We’re so lucky in NYC that we can hit the beach for a quick summer getaway, without even needing to go far at all! Fort Tilden Beach is one of the city’s best kept secrets--its three-mile sandy stretch remains so isolated there’s no lifeguard on duty there. Or scope out a spot at significantly more popular Rockaway Beach or its LGBTQ+ friendly cousin Jacob Riis Beach.
