Become a Volunteer
Looking for opportunities to give back to our community? Become a volunteer with Mutual Aid in NYC! Mutual Aid is a community-sourced and volunteer-led network providing care and supplies to people throughout the city. The organization is focused on offering support and resources to NYC’s most vulnerable communities. For more volunteer information and to find a group near you, check here. Donate to Our Community
Short on time but still want to find a way to contribute? There are many organizations in NYC seeking donation based assistance. The New York Foundation for Eldercare is a nonprofit providing education, treatment, and support materials for older adults and their caregivers--donations help sustain these vital resources for older members of our community. Or consider donating to Catholic Charities in NY, which provides food and shelter for those without housing, in addition to a number of other services for those in need.
Shop Local to Support New Hobbies
Pledging to read more in 2021? Consider purchasing books from small locally-owned businesses to help support our city’s economy! The iconic Strand Bookstore in Union Square allows you to browse their collection online and arrange for curbside pickup. Word Bookstores is another great independent option to check out in nearby Brooklyn. Word also hosts a ton of virtual book clubs, ranging in a wide variety of interests from Sci-Fi to the Gilmore Girls, all of which are excellent for getting excited about reading throughout the new year. Inspire Personal Productivity
If you’re working from home more, learning to manage time efficiently outside of the normal work day setting can be challenging. The good news is, there are so many great tools to help with productivity in 2021! Using a time tracking app like Harvest is great for staying on target, particularly when hours worked are directly connected to income. Find more info and check out a free 30-day trial of the app here. Prefer a slightly more old-fashioned approach? A good ‘ole pen and paper is all you need for a tried and true productivity technique like the Bullet Journal Method. The Bullet Journal method will help with staying organized and efficient, and they even have an app to pair with the journal if the digital approach is more your speed.
Get Organized at Home
The start of a new year is the ideal time to refresh our spaces and get organized at home. While this may seem like an overwhelming task, it’s made much easier by focusing on one area of the home at a time. Targeting something specific, like decluttering piles of excess paperwork, can be a great way to get started. Uncluttered Simplicity offers 4 easy steps for getting paperwork in order. Start by gathering all paperwork together and dividing into piles of “keep,” “toss,” or “shred.” Finish up by creating a filing system for the remaining documents.
