Celebrate Labor Day Weekend

Sep 2, 2021

Whether or not we’re ready to admit it, the upcoming Labor Day weekend typically marks the last chance for big summer fun here in NYC. We want to be sure you make the most of everything going on near Gateway, so we’ve rounded up the best sporting events, activities, weekend getaways, and more happening in and around New York this holiday. Read ahead and get ready to enjoy the three-day weekend with lots of good times to look forward to!

Attend the US Open

The popular US Tennis Open, held annually at Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, is once again welcoming fans into the stadium this year! Now until September 12th, catch the world’s biggest tennis stars competing in this exciting, prestigious tournament. Individual tickets are available for purchase here. Fans will be required to show proof of vaccination in order to attend the event. Learn more here.

Head to Bar Moxy

If you can’t snag tickets or prefer to avoid the crowds, head to Bar Moxy at Moxy Times Square to watch the US Open while sipping on their specialty themed cocktail, “The Grand Slam” (vodka, mint, lime, and red bull coconut) or $20 pitchers of Narragansett. On September 8th and 10th, Bar Moxy will also host a special Sigrún tennis apparel and accessories pop-up shop from 7-10pm. Find more details and make reservations here.

Football Season Returns

Labor Day weekend signals the unofficial start of fall, which means it’s also time for football season to return! Here in NYC, we’re lucky to have both the New York Giants and the New York Jets to root for. Find schedule and ticket info for the Giants here and for the Jets here.

Labor Day Getaway

While it’s still warm out, Labor Day’s long weekend is the perfect time for a quick little getaway. Not far from NYC, a magical summer oasis awaits at Fire Island. Easily accessible by ferry, spend the day relaxing on Fire Island’s beautiful beaches before heading to a local hotspot like the Pine’s popular Sip-n-Twirl. Or check out what the Jersey Shore has to offer, with a trip to Wildwood, NJ. The NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum will host a Labor Day Airfest, and be sure to stop by the boardwalk craft show for even more Labor Day weekend fun.

Visit Grand Banks

Toast to the unofficial end of summer with a visit aboard the historic schooner turned popular oyster bar/restaurant Grand Banks. Docked along the Hudson not far from Gateway, Grand Banks offers beautiful river views, a delicious seafood menu, and inspired specialty cocktails. Check out the menu ahead of time and make reservations here.

We can’t wait to see how you make the most of the holiday weekend! Be sure to share your adventures with us by tagging us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Wishing you a restful and enjoyable Labor Day weekend, from all of us at Gateway!
