5 Terrific Fall Day Trips
We love fall here at Gateway, what with all the pumpkin-flavored goodies, changing leaves, and start of chilly sweater weather. Whether you’re looking to enjoy a cozy upstate town or spend the day apple picking, now is the perfect time to venture just outside of the city. We’ve gathered up some of the best day trips right outside of New York for an escape to fall fun. Read ahead to learn more!
Blogger Blond Wayfarer has this guide to her fifteen favorite day trips outside of NYC, and top of the list is the idyllic upstate town of Sleepy Hollow. Nestled in the Hudson Valley, Sleepy Hollow is the birthplace of author Washington Irving--you can even visit the cemetery where he’s buried while you’re there! Be sure to check out the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze in nearby Croton-on-Hudson, which features roughly 7,000 hand-carved versions of the spooky pumpkins.
Bear Mountain State Park has an abundance of activities for the whole family to enjoy. MommyPoppins blog recommends taking a hike on one of the area’s many nature trails. Spread out and enjoy a picnic while taking in the scenic views. A walk across Bear Mountain Bridge offers all the stunning beauty to be found along the Hudson River.
Storm King Arts Center
Storm King Arts Center offers 500-acres of outdoor art viewing in the beautiful Hudson Valley. This stunning upstate environment is the perfect setting for appreciating their large-scale sculptures and site-specific art commissions. Timed-ticket entry is required and must be purchased in advance. Find more info here.
Ready for a trip to the apple orchard? Barton Orchards has you set with everything you need for picking your own apples and more! Their concession stand and farm store is open, so grab an apple cider donut after you’ve worked up an appetite from picking. Visitors can also enjoy a trip to the petting zoo or swinging from tree-to-tree in their Tree Top Adventures aerial course. Make sure to book tickets ahead of your trip here.
Elwood Pumpkin Farm
Elwood Pumpkin & Christmas Tree Farm is Long Island’s most western pumpkin farm, with all pumpkins grown right in their fields. Pick your own pumpkins off the vine here and have fun on their wagon rides (with limited capacity to ensure safe COVID-19 protocol). Kids can also take off in their children’s corn maze. No advanced reservations required, but check covid-related guidelines here.
